Vivaarta

[ we - vaar - taa]

विवर्त

An illusory of form caused by human error.

We have a knack for automotive lines which is the underlying inspiration for the dynamic forms we derive, that are then translated onto our products. Imagine an object in motion and then captured, that’s the emotion that a form needs to convey to us. Our vision is to change the way we view these objects, at the same time working to support the craft and design community.

Founded in 2019, Vivaarta is a design studio based out of Ahmedabad, India. The collection of work produced by Vivaarta design continues to make connections to elements of both Indian and Western cultures. With an established practice across the design spectrum, ranging from kitchen to space design, the studio has carved out a niche based on the philosophy of integrated design, with a special focus on artisanry and premium quality.

Nothing is too much trouble at our studio, we still turn every piece by hand, and our products are individually sanded and painstakingly polished in food-grade oil by hand. In a world full of synthetic copies, Vivaarta stands out for being a premium handcrafted brand. It’s carefully curated design aesthetic and craftsmanship that preserves artisanal sensibilities and minimalism to harmoniously blend form with function. When we sign our names to each handmade Vivaarta product, we are not only signing off on the quality of each item that leaves our workshop, we are proudly celebrating the process of creating ethically produced, handmade goods that are built to last.

Meet our founders

Pawan is a postgraduate in Lifestyle Accessory Design from NID. While Apurva is an Architect and holds a masters in design from CEPT University. Although both founders are formally educated in architecture and design. It is these two specialty skills that helped ‘Vivaarta’ to develop and refine their collections. At ‘Vivaarta’ they strive to create a nostalgic yet simple, functional and tactile design that last. We work in wood. It is patient and adaptable. Wood speaks of time and of impermanence and posses naratives of what has endured long before us stimulating our senses in a natural way. Connected by a shared belief in timeless aesthetics and wood turning method to create natural silhouettes and raw textures with impeccable finishes.

"Turning wood is more of a "seat of the pants" kind of thing! Our approach to design is to bridge the past with the present, resulting in functional products created to inspire."

One for all

The most important tool of our studio is the traditional Lathe. Wood always surprises us with it’s grains and it’s stunning patterns. Often this is how we get inspired to understand how far we can go with the organic lines and forms in it. Realizing a material’s true strength and maximum potential is a medium to convey the narrative. Accentuating wood’s properties by consciously creating contrasting textures or monotones as per guiding narrative. Bespoke products are not an extra, but rather an integral part of our whole approach.

We love the natural feel of wood and try to preserve that as much as possible in our work, none of the products we create are finished using varnish or lacquers so as to celebrate the organic texture of each species of wood. The pieces are polished by hand with food safe oil.
